chapter-21 |The chain between us|

Avimanyu POV:-

The slam of that door still rang in my ears.

I stormed out of Ekansh’s mansion, rage burning like fire in my veins. For a moment, when I first saw my sister’s tear-filled eyes, I thought I had won. I thought I would finally bring her back into my arms where she belonged.

But Ekansh…

That man I once called brother—he had changed. No, perhaps he had always been this way and I’d been too blind to see it. His obsession with Ishani wasn’t just unhealthy—it was dangerous.

Every word he spoke clung to me like poison. She’s mine. She’ll never leave me. Without her, I’m nothing.

I clenched my fists, the steering wheel creaking beneath my grip as I drove away from the mansion. The roads blurred past, but all I could see was Ishani’s face.

Her trembling lips.

Her desperate cry—Bhaiya, take me away.

And her broken collapse when I left her behind.

My chest heaved with guilt. “I failed you today, Choti,” I whispered into the night. “But I swear, I’ll bring you back. No matter what it takes.”

I pulled over to the side of the road, unable to drive further. My hands shook, my throat burned. For the first time in years, I let myself break. My fists slammed against the dashboard as a raw cry tore from my chest.

“Ekansh!” I roared into the silence. “You’ve turned into a monster.”

But monsters fall.

And I would be the one to make sure he fell.

---

Ishani POV:-

The silence after Bhaiya left was deafening.

I curled into myself on the cold floor, every sob rattling through my chest. For one fleeting moment, hope had touched me. I thought I’d finally be saved. But now…

Now I was more trapped than ever.

Ekansh knelt beside me, his hands cupping my face. His eyes glistened with something raw, something vulnerable, but it didn’t comfort me. His touch wasn’t warmth—it was fire that burned me, branded me.

“Don’t cry, kitten,” he whispered, pressing his forehead to mine. “I know you’re hurting. I know you think I’m cruel. But one day… you’ll understand.”

“Understand what?” I choked out, shoving at his chest. “That you’ve stolen my life? That you’ve torn me away from my family? That you’re destroying me?”

His jaw tightened. For a moment, I thought he would explode in fury. Instead, he pulled me against his chest, holding me so tightly I could barely breathe.

“That I love you,” he whispered hoarsely. “Even if it kills me. Even if it makes you hate me. You’re mine, Ishani. Only mine.”

I thrashed in his grip, but it was useless. He was stronger. Always stronger. My tears soaked into his shirt as I screamed against him, but he only rocked me like I was a child, his obsession disguised as comfort.

I hated him.

I hated the way he broke me and then tried to piece me back together, as if I belonged to him.

But worse… a tiny, traitorous part of me trembled when his arms held me. Not with comfort—no, never that. With fear. With the sick, terrifying truth that maybe he would never let me go.

---

Avimanyu POV:-

By the time I reached home, my resolve had hardened into steel.

I called my most trusted men, the ones who had been with me since the beginning. “She’s alive,” I told them, my voice sharp. “She’s with him. But he won’t give her back willingly.”

One of them frowned. “Ekansh is dangerous, Bro. If we push too hard—”

“I don’t care,” I snapped, my patience burning thin. “She’s my sister. My blood. Do you understand what that means? Nothing in this world comes before her safety.”

They exchanged uneasy glances but nodded. They knew better than to argue.

I paced the room, running through possibilities. Ekansh wouldn’t hurt her physically—I was certain of that. His obsession wouldn’t allow it. But mentally? Emotionally? Every second she stayed with him was another second her spirit withered.

“Ishani,” I muttered, staring out the window at the moonlit sky. “Hold on for me. I’m coming back. And this time—I won’t leave without you.”

---

Ishani POV:-

         That night, I couldn’t sleep.

Ekansh had locked the door, though he stayed beside me, his hand entwined with mine as if I would vanish the second he let go. His head rested near mine on the pillow, his breathing steady, but I knew he wasn’t asleep.

Neither was I.

I stared at the ceiling, the shadows of the night pressing down on me. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Bhaiya’s face. The fury, the helplessness, the promise. I’ll come back for you.

My heart clung to those words like a lifeline.

But Ekansh’s grip around my fingers reminded me of the chains that bound me here. He murmured in his half-sleep, words slurred but chilling. “Mine… always mine…”

Tears slid silently down my cheeks.

I was torn in two—one half aching for freedom, for my brother’s love. The other trapped in this twisted bond, crushed under the weight of a man who loved me so fiercely it felt like destruction.

And in that darkness, a terrifying thought crept into my mind.

What if Bhaiya failed?

What if no one could save me?

Would I eventually stop fighting?

Would I… become his completely?

The thought sent shivers down my spine. I curled away from him as much as his grip allowed, silently begging the universe for strength.

---

Avimanyu POV:-

The next morning, I rose with fire in my chest.

I gathered everything I knew about Ekansh—his routines, his security, his weaknesses. Years of brotherhood meant I understood him better than anyone. That would be his downfall.

He thought he could outsmart me.

He thought he could keep her forever.

But he underestimated one thing.

I was her brother.

And I would tear the world apart to protect her.

As the sun rose, I whispered a vow to myself, to my parents’ memories, to the heavens above:

“I’ll bring you home, Choti. Even if it costs me everything.”

---

Ishani POV:-

Morning light spilled into the room, warming my face. But the warmth didn’t reach my heart.

Ekansh was already awake, watching me with that same unreadable gaze. He brushed a strand of hair from my cheek, smiling faintly.

“Good morning, kitten.”

I didn’t answer. My silence was my rebellion.

He only chuckled, unfazed. “One day, you’ll stop glaring at me like that. One day, you’ll see I’m the only one who can love you like this.”

My stomach turned, but I bit back my words. What was the point? He wouldn’t listen.

Still… deep down, I clung to Bhaiya’s promise. He would come back. I believed it with every shred of my soul.

And when he did… I prayed I would still have enough strength left to run.
